Does Playing Poker With Sunglasses Help?

!±8± Does Playing Poker With Sunglasses Help?

One of the most popular stereotypes of a poker player is the sunglasses wearing. Just about everyone is aware that there are poker players that wear sunglasses. Some people think it is just ridiculous, while others will not go without playing with their sunglasses. Whether it seems goofy or kind of cool, it does actually help with a lot of different things. It has nothing to do with the sun, but it does have a lot to do with poker; believe it or not.

The reason that most players will give you when you ask them why they are wearing sunglasses is always the same. They say one of two things; so people cannot read them or because the lights get too bright. The players that are not ashamed of wearing sunglasses inside blame it on the light, while the ones that don't care state exactly why they are wearing them. Some players do not eve know whey they are wearing them; they just think it is the cool thing to do.

So, what do they actually help with?

They do actually help quite a bit with people not being able to read you. One of the best reads people can get is from your eyes. That is also a read that is hard to stop. Your body language probably cannot be hidden with sunglasses, but that is easier to change. If you have sunglasses on and people cannot see your eyes, then that is one less thing that people can read about you. Just be sure that you are not showing your cards off in the reflection of your sunglasses; that does really happen.

The glasses also will work the opposite. There are a lot of poker players that wear sunglasses to get reads on other people. If they cannot see your eyes then it makes it a lot easier to stare at them without them knowing you are doing that. You would be amazed of what people do when they don't know you are staring right into their eyes. It is pretty funny actually. All jokes aside; this really does help to read your players and get some great information. Without the glasses they are probably going to be aware that you are staring and avoid doing anything stupid.

Lastly is the way that they make you feel at the table. This one probably sounds really stupid but it is a fact that some people just feel more comfortable hiding behind the glasses. It is a good way to kind of hide and pretend like you are not there. You can be a behind the scenes type player and get away with a lot more in your head. Even though it doesn't really matter if you have glasses or not, it can make you a lot more confident, especially if you are used to wearing them all the time.

No matter what the reason is that a poker player wears sunglasses; it all comes down to one simple thing. They are used to hide your eyes, and that has become something that can be of a benefit for a lot of people. So the answer to that question would have to be yes, it does help to wear sunglasses at the poker table. Still, there are many people (especially the old timers) that will insist that there is no reason at all to put on sunglasses while you are inside of a building.

What Can a Naked Couple Teach You About Attracting Readers for Your Writing?

!±8± What Can a Naked Couple Teach You About Attracting Readers for Your Writing?

The other day at a newspaper's web site, I spotted this headline for a story from the Associated Press: "Naked Couple Grapple Over Dog Near Shower."

I was researching something else, but I had to stop and check out the naked couple story. What did the dog have to do with it? And, for that matter, the shower?

Well, it turns out they were taking a shower together and the guy wanted his dog in the bathroom with them. Don't ask me why, they didn't go into that part in the article. Anyway, his girlfriend didn't want the dog there, and they got into an argument that turned physical. The girlfriend was arrested for investigation of second-degree assault (she threw a picture frame that broke and cut him).

Another headline from the same site: "Men Shoot Themselves in Tattoo Attempt." It worked again: I felt compelled to find out how you could possibly shoot yourself while trying to give yourself a tattoo.

The reason I'm telling you all this? I believe that this headline illustrates a hugely powerful tool that writers can use: namely, the power of curiosity. We human beings are wired for it. Even when we know that we should be doing something else, when something arouses our curiosity, we just have to find out what's going on.

How can you harness the power of curiosity for your writing? Let's take the example of a book. Most people have a set routine when browsing at a book store: look at the title, look at the front cover, look at the back cover, then look at the table of contents if it's a non-fiction book, or the first page if it's a novel. Each of these gives writers the chance to heighten curiosity.

CURIOSITY-AROUSING TITLES

More and more, authors are giving their books intriguing titles. A recent example: "The Secret." Who doesn't want to know a secret, much less THE Secret? Or how about "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?" What the heck are hallows, especially deathly ones? Or the marketing book, "Made to Stick"-that one hooks you long enough to read the sub-title, "Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die," which explains what the book is about while at the same time arousing further curiosity.

THE POWERFUL BACK COVER

The back cover usually features some testimonials that reinforce the idea that you'll find something useful inside. The best ones also raise our curiosity level more. Compare these two testimonials:

"Joe Bloggs has written the best book on getting organized that I've ever read. It's helped me a lot. - Martin Smith"

"Joe Bloggs reveals the three secrets that finally allowed me to get organized. - Martin Smith"

The first just makes me wonder whether Joe and Martin are old pals. The second makes me wonder what these three secrets could be.

CAN YOUR TABLE OF CONTENTS KEEP A SECRET?

A good table of contents should reveal what's in the book but still keep some secrets. For example, let's say I'm interested in a book about how to conduct better meetings. A traditional table of contents might include these chapters:
The importance of having an agenda How to make sure everybody participates Keeping to a schedule

These are all valid topics, but frankly they sound boring. I get the feeling I've heard all this before. Compare that to these chapter titles:
SATNAV power for meetings Even the guy under the table has an opinion How to finish meetings before you die

The core content may be the same in both cases but the second version sounds more interesting. If you think these titles are a little too flamboyant or obscure, you could combine the two:
SATNAV power for meetings: the importance of having an agenda

With that version it's more clear what the chapter is about, but it still suggests that it will be an entertaining read.

The final thing people tend to look at before making a decision about buying is the first sentence. Lots of novels take advantage of this, with anything from "Call me Ishmael," to "The first time I tried to kill my husband was on a Tuesday-or maybe Wednesday, because it was after midnight." The same can work in non-fiction. In my marketing book, "Do Something Different," my first sentence starts, "I hope you're feeling frustrated..." My point was that if the readers were frustrated about getting out the word about their product or service and wanted to find out how to do so cheaply and quickly, this book was about to give them exactly what they wanted.

And now I'm curious how you are going to use this principle to make your writing more appealing.

P.S.: The men who accidentally shot themselves were trying to trace a loaded .357 Magnum as a pattern for a tattoo. The gun went off and the bullet hit both of them, but neither had life-threatening injuries.

First Time Handgun For A Woman

!±8± First Time Handgun For A Woman

Many women prefer to own a gun. What advice people have for a first time handgun for a woman, who is not a big fan of revolvers, so something in the semi-automatic category?

Be aware that some of the wannabe swat-types and other video game playing types will tell you to buy some artillery piece. Disregard them and do a little homework. The .22LR cal. is the way to go for a first gun. When and if woman gets comfortable with it and can hit the target, then she could move up to a bigger caliber.

Try searching for Smith & Wesson (or get a catalog at a local gun shop). Go to a local shooting range and rent or borrow a couple of different ones to get used to. The one near me let's you borrow their pistol if you buy a bag of their ammo. Start with .22 cal, and then if the woman can handle it OK, try the .38 Spcl. Ask one of the range guys to instruct you.

Try the revolver; it is still the most goof-proof weapon. No decocking lever, safeties, no lost-the-magazine (when you need it the most), no "rack the slide" at 0300 when her palms are sweaty, and it doesn't need to be kept as clean as a "self loader".

Avoid off-brand and chippo priced guns. Remember the saying: You get what you pay for. The suggestion is to stick with S&W, Colt or Ruger. If you really need a handgun, you want one that goes bang when you pull the trigger. I think the Lady Smiths are the same as the other "J" frames, with a bit of extra engraving and for a bit more money, of course. Rossi makes good firearms too, which will cost less the S&Ws, Rugers, Colts, etc.

Ruger Standard .22 auto is easy to learn on, next to no recoil, great accuracy, used from plinking to small game hunting, can be used in a pinch for defense...which beats a phone call not made to 911.

If she is gun savvy at all, then a 1911A1. Recoil is not excessive (my daughter regularly shoots mine, as do the many thousands of female IPSC competitors). Obviously, quite good for defense targets, small game hunting, plinking, and competition. However, unless her hands are on the large side, a 1911A1 style handgun may be a bit big.

Smith and Wesson .22 auto mag for the same reasons S&B noted but with more "knock down" power for self defense. Load it with hollow points and it is the best home defense weapon for more petite people. The ammo is very cheap so it allows for a lot of range time.

Look at the Taurus Model 85s. It is a very good pistol at about half the price of an S&W.

You will be able to put your eyes and hands on a lot of different makes, models, calibers, and sizes. You'll be able to eliminate some of them from consideration pretty quick.

Length: 14 1/5 inches The .357 S&W Magnum, or simply .357 Magnum, is a revolver cartridge created by Elmer Keith, Phillip B. Sharpe, Colonel D. B. Wesson of firearms manufacturer Smith & Wesson, and Winchester. It is based upon Smith & Wesson's earlier .38 Special cartridge. The .357 Magnum cartridge was introduced in 1934, and its use has since become widespread. This cartridge started the "Magnum" era of handgun ammunition.[6] This cartridge has sufficient energy to produce hydrostatic shock (remote wounding effects) in living targets, which probably contributes to its positive reputation for stopping power.
